A celebration of Mallorca’s surrealist master
Grand jewel of Mallorca, La Residencia nestles between the dramatic La Tramuntana mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. Olive and citrus groves surround its historic 16th Century stone buildings, set in lush landscape on the edge of legendary artists’ village, Deià. When the time came for a brand renewal, Nelson Associates was approached by Belmond (one of a rarefied group of global luxury brands in the LVMH maison) to celebrate the hotel’s enduring connection with surrealist icon, the artist and ceramicist, Joan Miró.
La Residencia is a place of pilgrimage for poets, painters and writers from all over the world, its sumptuous sculpture garden peppered with 750 artworks. This extraordinary retreat houses iconic dining destinations, Café Miró and Bar Miro, featuring 33 of the artist’s original paintings on the walls. Our brand reinvention objective was to create an immersive feel across the property, evoking the spirit of one of the 20th century’s most influential artists in the environment and identity. So, the process wasn’t just one of creativity – but also of intense collaboration. Working with La Residencia’s resident sculpture garden curator and Successió Miró, guardians of the artist’s estate and reputation, we were able to negotiate rare permission to reinterpret a key work in our designs.
With the Estate’s blessing we were able to draw our inspiration from Miró’s 1968 masterpiece, Poème, referencing brushstrokes, colour palette and the artist’s utilitarian stencil typographic style. Our refined stencil letterforms makes both marques uniquely reminiscent of the maestro, while menus feature a curated scattering of elements directly from the painting. As visitors sit at their tables, surrounded by Miro’s works, our menus add to the immersive spirit of the place, and have become a sought-after keepsake to treasure after a visit.
